Newcastle Museum
About Newcastle Museum
When the idea for a regional museum in Newcastle was first developed, it didn't take long before there were plans to find space. The consortium that promoted this wish had their eyes set on one place: Honeysuckle Workshops-a state-owned site with plenty of room available and interesting history as well! They worked hard pushing forward these proposals until finally achieving success when they got approval from the Minister at the Department of Industry & Science back in on1988; thus establishing what we now know today.
The new Newcastle Museum opened to the community on 4 August 2011. Located in a historic Honeysuckle Railway workshop, this more than simply reinvigorates memories of an old regional museum which was located downtown and founded in 1988 as the bicentennial project--it's also contemporary with accessible exhibitions that will engage all ages!
What to do at Newcastle Museum
The Blacksmith's Shop has been home to some of the most historic events in our town history. It was built out of local brick and can be seen today as one-third building that once made up all workshops on this site, including wheelwork for cars or horse-drawn vehicles which is where it got its name "Black" from! The oldest building on site, the Blacksmith's Shop was built in 1880 and continued its role as a wheel shop for 55 years until 1937. Now with enclosed spaces to house, all types of equipment are displayed proudly by our expert staff who are eager to share their knowledge about historic machinery!
The new Museum Shop is a one-stop destination for all your educational needs! You'll find kids' games and toys, history books about our region from around Australia as well local jewellery. If you're looking to buy something special or just want an insight into what makes this place so great then head on down - we've got everything there under the sun (and more).
